ELECTION
FACTS
You may vote if you:
You may register if you:
- are a U.S. Citizen
- are 18 years of age or older by election
day
- are a resident of Tennessee
- have not been convicted of a felony or if
convicted, had voting rights restored by court order or pardon.
The registration deadline is 30 days before
election day. You do not have to declare a political party affiliation
to register.
You may register in person at:
- your county election commission during
office hours
- other sites (watch the Cannon County
Network for dates, places and hours)
Take personal identification with you.
You may register by mail on forms available
at the:
- county election commission, post office,
library, motor vehicle licensing station, human services, military
recruiting and veterans affairs offices.
- Register-by-Mail forms are available from
the Election Commission for any organization to hold its own
registration drive.
- Registered voters will receive a voter
registration card.
- Change of address instructions are
included on the card.
You must re-register if you:
- move outside your county
- move within your county and fail to
transfer your registration
- change your name
- have had full rights restored by a court
order or pardon
You vote at:
- your polling place in the precinct where
you are registered, which will be listed on your voter
registration card.
Voting hours are published. Identification
with your signature may be requested.
You may vote early in person:
- at the county election commission office 5
to 20 days before the election or at another location designated
by the commission.
You may ask for assistance to vote:
- if you are blind, disabled, elderly, or if
you are illiterate.
Your ballot can be marked for you by your
mother, father, brother, sister, spouse or an election judge of your
choice. If your polling place is not handicapped accessible call your
county election commission for instructions to vote at the election
office.
If
disabled or the caretaker of a disabled person, you may be placed on
the permanent absentee ballot mail list:
- call your county election commission for
details.
You may request an emergency absentee
ballot:
If, 5 days or less, before the election you
are:
- unexpectedly hospitalized
- attending the funeral of a family member
outside your county
- summoned to court
You may apply to vote absentee by mail or
fax for any of the following reasons:
- you will be outside of the county in which
you live
- you are a full-time student or the spouse
of a full-time student out of your county
- are in the armed forces anywhere
- age 65 or older
To apply for an absentee ballot by mail or
fax:
- write the county election commission where
you are registered and request an absentee ballot.
- students who are registered to vote in
Tennessee may also get an application from the election commission
in the Tennessee county where they go to school.
ELECTION DATES
City Elections: Third Tuesday of April in even-numbered
years.
County Party Primary Elections: First Tuesday of May in
even-numbered years when requested by a political party.
State Party Primary Elections: First Thursday of August in
even-numbered years.
General Elections: First Tuesday after the First Monday of
November in even-numbered years.
County General Election: First Thursday of August in
even-numbered years.
PUBLIC NOTICE IS GIVEN 45 DAYS PRIOR TO SPECIAL
ELECTIONS.
Dates by which a candidate must qualify in order to run for
election vary according to the election. Notice is given in local
newspapers. Also, for this or any other election information, you may
